Hi. I am brand new to this forum. I am not on 80/10/10, however, I have discovered that the type of eating I naturally favored most and did the best with, coincides with Dr. Graham's approach. Finally finding someone in the vegan/raw food world who gets it, is great. I've learned a lot and watching his video has helped me to connect the dots of things I knew were right, but didn't necessarily know how to explain from a nutritional standpoint. Raw food people always telling me I was wrong for not having more fats, always telling me I was eating much too much fruit and all the perils to follow if I had all those apples(I'd buy 20lbs at the farmers market.) Always being told to mix up my foods and be creative when I was already fully satisfied with the individual taste and effect of each fruit or vegetable.
I know that my energy source is vitally important and so I eat what my body tells me. I was hoping some of you on here who train might enlighten me and share how there could be enough protein in this diet to repair and build new muscle for a serious bodybuilder. I am not a serious body builder, by the way. I have a cousin who has heard me talking about fruits and vegetables for years. He's seen the results with me. I barely work out and he saw me get pretty ripped and have more energy than he has at eighteen(I am thirty-one.) But he wants to get big. And he is around people who eat the traditional bodybuilder's diet and get serious results. Is it possible to build big muscle on this type of diet without soy and other supplements? Hemp? I am aware that there are vegan bodybuilders. I have checked out many of their diets and they usually include lots of supplements. I am not a fan of supplements. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thank you. This is a very cool site. I am looking forward to finally reading 80/10/10. If the answer to this question is in the book, please forgive my ignorance. Thanks.

Much of it is in the book (The 80/10/10 Diet) as well as Nutrition and Athletic Performance. If you haven't already ordered the book, you might want to get the 80/10/10 Athlete Combo package that includes both of those books as well as Grain Damage. You'll probably want to read all of them with the sorts of interests you have.

From my observations, people build amazing amounts of strength and get ripped on 80/10/10 as well as improve performance in many areas (not to mention increased health and vitality), however muscle size does not necessarily grow in the same manner as you get more dense, lean muscle on 80/10/10. This makes you more functional physically for performance, and allows you to be ripped all year, but will also probably require a bit more work for the tape measure measurements to grow at the same rate as most non-80/10/10 muscle has fat under, over and/or through (marbling) it and 80/10/10 muscle is more likely not to have that excess fat. Also, part of the reason you get so ripped is 'cause you don't retain water so much and you don't get bloated and puffy. This allows you to not have to do extreme things in order to be ripped before a competition as is customary in the sport. Because of this I'd suggest comparing contest muscle sizes rather than non-contest sizes in order to get a better equality of size gains which can certainly be done on 80/10/10. I've seen quite a lot of people gain muscle size on 80/10/10.

Here's a recent video of an interview of a fitness model competitor (can't remember if she's fitness or figure competitor) that may address some of this for you. Enjoy! :)
