The musical arts is a fantastically overlooked element of health that deserves to be highlighted, perhaps even more so during the holiday season.
As much of the world is trimming their trees, lighting their candles, and attending other such festive services, such activities are often accompanied by traditional music. Whether you count yourself religious or not, this musical aspect of the holidays was hard for me to ignore as a child and remains to this day, an integral part of everyday December cheer.
With a mother who had an ear for music and played the violin, and a multi-talented father with multiple music degrees and master of instruments including the piano and tuba, us four kids were bound to be musically inclined. After Thanksgiving Dinner, music became infused into every family tradition surrounding Christmas: we diligently broke out the Christmas albums to support our decorative efforts, we caroled all month long around the neighborhood with cheer, we even recorded an annual “Family Christmas Album” that we sent to friends and family. Music was indeed synonymous with the season.
As time passed and we all “left the nest” it has become more apparent to me the gift that I’ve been given in the form of musical arts. I hear songs on the radio or in passing and I recall those very same melodies streaming across my childhood psyche. Music is powerful; it can bring back memories unquenched and wistful visions of the past.
Music is more than a tool that spurs nostalgia though, it is also the stuff of new impressions. Whether you use music this season as a vehicle for remembrance, worship, or new alternative celebration, be sure to relish every note, because it matters.

Someday Isle is an imaginary futuristic place where people go who likely will not achieve this, that, or their next stated goal. Banana Island, on the other hand, is a place where much is accomplished. For the past twenty-five years, I've been leading tours through two very different experiences, each named (admittedly somewhat confusingly) Banana Island.
Out of the popularity of these two experiences was born a third foray into mono eating, also named Banana Island. For the sake of clarity, we can refer to these three unique experiences, each appropriately called Banana Island, as Banana Island Guided, Banana Island Retreat, and Banana Island Solo. Read More
