Many techniques exist for dealing with stress, but none of them are as effective or as good for you as a challenging and engaging session of physical activity. Sure, you can dwell on your problems even when being moderately active, but once the activity becomes challenging, once you put your entire focus on what you are doing, all thought of whatever was stressing you fades deep into the background. Full-on activity is accompanied by a flood of hormones, and each of those hormones changes your perception, thus altering the way you perceive that which had been stressing you. Like water off of a duck's back, your prior stresses melt away when you throw yourself fully into physical activity. For centuries, monks have performed yoga in order to quiet their minds in readiness for meditation. Athletes often talk of being "in the zone," where the body starts performing on auto-pilot, and thoughts, especially thoughts of the outside world, completely disappear. Getting away from your issues, even if just for the short period of time during physical activity, is often enough to change the way you look at things, give you a new perspective whereby your problems no longer loom so large, and possibly even stimulate insights as to how to eliminate the cause of your stress.
