Celebrating the 45th Earth Day
April 22nd is the 45th commemoration of Earth Day which began in 1970. The social consciousness around environmentalism was in full swing as a large oil spill in 1969 gave the movement wings. Earth Day experienced a boost as well in 1990 with a large emphasis on recycling Reduce Reuse Recycle A great way to honor the Earth is to make a pledge. You can pledge to reduce or reuse an excess in your world or to pick up trash on your walk/runs. Doing charitable service is good for your health in performing an act of kindness reduces your stress levels and lowers the stress hormone, cortisol. Our own Kevin Cosmo says he spends his first ten minutes doing a warm up and that involves cleaning up litter. If you are mindful of your movements you can use the bending and stretching in collecting the rubbish as added movement in your routine. My grandfather showed me this practice of collecting litter. He took a daily constitutional of at least a two mile walk every day. His habit and goal was framed out of necessity, however the practice morphed into a teaching lesson for us grandchildren. One in maintaining health through movement and two, knowing that you have a place in your community that mirrors your place in your family. This place is one of service, everyone must do their job at home, and home is all around us. I certainly hope you find this Spring edition of our eNews motivating and inspiring.
