During a recent study, I came across some interesting insights that I believe shed light on the unique nature of human beings.
The Law of Identity states that creatures with anatomical and physiological similarities tend to thrive on similar types of food.
This principle is based on the idea that their anatomy and physiology are so closely aligned that they are inherently designed to obtain and consume similar foods in similar ways. This holds true, we are told, for the majority of animals worldwide, with one exception—humans.
Where Humans Are Truly Different from All Other Animals
Humans possess an exceptional degree of free will compared to other creatures on Earth. While other anthropoid species also demonstrate some level of free will, ours is unparalleled. We have the ability to make choices about our lifestyles, and at times, we appear to act contrary to our own nature, seemingly breaking the Law of Identity.
However, upon closer examination, we are not actually breaking this law; instead, we are providing a profound illustration of it. Humans possess the remarkable capacity to ponder "what if" and then actively pursue those wonderings. In fact, it is precisely these unique qualities, attributes, potentials, and limitations that make us distinct as a species.
Additionally, humans have the ability to either learn from or disregard the models set by nature. While some animals adhere to a monogamous mating pattern while others do not, there is no inherent right or wrong or good or bad in this regard.
Nevertheless, every choice we make carries consequences. We can choose to live healthfully, embracing our symbiotic roles in nature, or we can choose to live unhealthily. However, each attempt to defy the laws of nature will inevitably result in nature asserting its dominance over us.
It Is Not Within Our Nature to Act Outside the Confines of Our Own Inherent Nature
In light of this, I find it fitting to embrace the phrase, "I am what I am," as a bumper sticker for the Law of Identity.
Now, let's explore an application of this concept in relation to mucous membranes. When these membranes are irritated, they produce mucus as a protective response. The copious amounts of mucus serve as a barrier between the delicate cells of the body and the irritant, while also functioning as a transport medium to expel the irritant from the body.
Contrary to popular belief, introducing irritants into the digestive tract does not result in cleansing. Instead, it triggers an increased production of mucus as a response to the irritant. This production of mucus does not indicate that cleansing has occurred, nor does it signify the removal of existing mucus from the digestive system. The mucus was only present in the digestive system after the introduction of the irritant.
To illustrate this, let's consider the practice of holding lemon juice in one's mouth. While this may lead to a significant production of mucus, it is essential to understand that it does not imply cleansing. In fact, it is no different from applying lemon juice to one's eyes, as both situations lead to irritation and subsequent mucus production. The body's response to irritation is consistent, and it adheres to the laws governing its own identity.
In conclusion, the Law of Identity serves as a fundamental principle in comparative anatomy, emphasizing the relationship between anatomical and physiological similarities and dietary preferences among creatures.
As humans, we possess an unparalleled degree of free will, allowing us to ponder, wonder, and make choices that sometimes appear contrary to our own nature. However, these choices ultimately confirm the uniqueness of our species.
I hope you found this exploration of the Law of Identity and its application in comparative anatomy enlightening.
