What Grant Campbell Eats in a Day : Grant Campbell: Accomplished Athlete and Seasoned 80/10/10 Raw Vegan

80/10/10 isn’t about eating less than 10% of total calories from fat and from protein in every meal, or even every day, but rather as an average over the course of a month. Even for the week, Grant’s fat intake was still below 10% of total calories despite the quantity of durian consumed on this day.

Grant Campbell (aka Raw Aussie Athlete), ultramarathoner, fruit connoisseur and our very own Director of Education has been an 80/10/10 raw vegan since 2005 and a devoted vegan since 1999.

What then, does a seasoned fruit lover and elite athlete eat in a day? Let’s take a look! Continue reading

That was one Tough Mudder!

It isn't every day that one gets the chance to jump into a pool of ice water, swim underwater to the far end, break through the ice, and then laugh at yourself as your muscles completely fail you in your efforts to simply climb out of the freezing wet, unable to feel your legs. Nor do we often have the opportunity to crawl under a real army tank through thick, wet mud, carry someone your own weight up a long hill, climb high walls, steep ramps, and other forbidding obstacles, run through cages fitted with thousands of live electric wires, and attempt to conquer a dozen or so other fitness challenges, all during the course of an otherwise normal but very hilly, twelve-mile run. Tough Mudder is truly an assault course, designed to challenge and entertain reasonably fit individuals, with a variety of creative stations. I didn't master all of them, but I did complete the course.

The first few events were relatively tame … Continue reading

The 32 Elements of Health:
Vigorous Activity : Element #6

Vigorous physical activity is a joyous celebration of movement. It can be a form of art, a means of release, a source of fun, or an inner exploration. To be active is a privilege, and it is high time that we experience regular activity in our lives. Children aren’t the only ones to thrive when they move about a lot; we do too. Without exercise, we grow tired and our attitude becomes stale. Moving is a source of pleasure, and the temporary “high” we obtain from it is a natural and constructive means of enhancing our mood. 32 Elements of Health: How Round is Your Wheel? : (Introduction to a 32-part series)

“We cause our health, or we cause our sickness, through our mode of living!”

— Dr. Herbert M. Shelton

In the coming months, we will be presenting a series of short articles about each of the 32 fundamental elements of health, as identified on page 10 of The 80/10/10 Diet. Today we present a list of the 32 factors, so that we can all prepare for the coming lessons! This list is not exhaustive, nor it is presented in any particular order or ranking. However, we consider the first ten to be indispensable, essential, for even a moderate level of true health.

Most of these elements work synergistically. That is, when we incorporate any one of them into our lives, others may be enhanced as well. Conversely, a neglected or out-of-balance element can diminish the integrity of one or more of the others. Continue reading

The Challenges of Going on a Raw Food Diet

Only a few people have consistently maintained a completely raw diet over a period of years that lasted into decades. For many folks, the raw food diet is an experiment that fails rapidly. Initial weight loss results are deemed positive, when a person has weight to lose, but for those who are already thin, this first response of rapid weight loss and subsequent fatigue tends to be received in a negative light. Of course, everyone blames the diet, ignoring the details of how they actually applied it. The old adage “practice makes perfect” is applicable, but it should be amended to say, “perfect practice makes perfect,” for those who fail early tend to give up rather than persist and pull through.

Calories Per Bite

A crucial steppingstone for success in a healthy raw diet is understanding the concept of… Continue reading

80/10/10 Athlete: Freelee : All-Around Athlete

"I tried a high-fat raw vegan lifestyle but just felt so sluggish and depressed. I wasn't obtaining enough carbohydrates to meet my energy requirements, so I began to binge on sweet foods. Yes I felt better than when I was on a standard diet but still not great, and it wasn't sustainable. When I switched to high fruit, the heavens opened! I felt like a new person; I knew I had found the answer!" Continue reading
